A Matter of the Heart: John F. Kerry for President
It has been difficult to avoid taking a public stance on the
upcoming election, but lately it seems impossible as our campus and
the outside world has been flooded over in a sea of buttons, bumper
stickers, T-shirts and lawn advertisements. Heading into the final
turn of what has been quite an ugly election race, it’s
essential that Tulane students make their voices heard. “It
is vital that all students vote in this election to turn around
problems created by the short-sighted policies of George
Bush,” said Tulane College Democrats community service chair
Emily Rothschild. Despite talk of voting records and flip-flopping,
what is evident about Democratic candidate Sen. John F. Kerry is
that he is the better choice come Nov. 2.
First, it is
clear that a main concern on the forefront of all our minds these
days is war and national safety. Author and
” color: black;”>Vietnamveteran
Tim O’Brien, who spoke last Monday at the
” color: black;”>University of
Southern
Mississippi, stressed in his
speech that there is knowledge about war that one can only gain
from actually being in a war. Since
” color: black;”>America
” color: black;”>couldn’t be more preoccupied with the threat
of terror and war on its own soil, the person you want making the
decisions of the entire nation has to be the guy who has been there
before. Kerry is the candidate who has been in trenches and knows
that war can only be a last resort. The question that still
remains unanswered by Bush and Republicans is how does waging a war
in Iraq
” color: black;”> directly serve as a response to Osama Bin
Laden? Kerry put the matter in perspective during the
presidential debates when he mentioned that attacking
style=” color: black;”>Mexico
” color: black;”>after
” color: black;”>Japan bombed
Pearl Harbor
” color: black;”> would be the equivalent to how
style=” color: black;”>America
attacked Iraq
style=” color: black;”> in 2004.
Secondly,
Americans simply have a luxury that other countries don’t. As
it stands today we are the world’s power, but will it always
be this way? Will
” color: black;”>America one
day have to turn to the rest of the world for help? Once you strip
away all the imaginary boundaries and divisions of country and
state that we invest so much time in, and look at individuals on a
person to person basis, it is clear that Kerry is better for the
world. Being an American abroad in the world has never been such a
concern as it is today and we simply can’t finish what George
Bush’s administration’s started in Iraq without support
from the rest of the world. How can we expect
style=” color: black;”>America
” color: black;”>to shoulder the financial burden of a broken
Iraq
” color: black;”> alone?
Winston Churchill
once said, “If you’re young and you’re not
liberal, you have no heart, and if you’re old and
you’re not conservative, you have no brain.” Sure
it’s true that most Tulane students haven’t had to pay
taxes, feed a family, or deal with medical coverage, but if at some
point you decide to compromise your ideals for your checkbook, then
you have lost something fundamentally human.
