According to survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau, New Orleans ranks eighth among the 51 largest U.S. cities for the percentage of residents who walk or bike as their main mode of transportation.
The report, compiled by the Alliance for Biking and Walking, reported that 9 percent of trips made in the city are done […]

I know that Pitchfork is supposed to be the end-all-be-all of “indie” music, but sometimes they’re just plain wrong. Contra is not as great as they seem to think it is. Merriweather Post Pavilion was not the greatest album of the last year. Having said that, the Pitchfork list of the Top 100 Tracks of the 2009 […]

If the only mention of “Battlestar Galactica” you’ve ever heard was John Krazinski’s spot-on Dwight Schrute impersonation saying, “Bears, Beets, ‘Battlestar Galactica,’” you haven’t experienced one of the most compelling shows of the decade. Contrary to popular belief, “Battlestar” wasn’t just a show about spaceships, robots and explosions, though those parts were a significant part […]

Talking about “Lost” without resorting to exclamations of “Oh my god” or “What the frak?” is almost impossible. You’ve got to hand it to the masterminds behind one of the greatest shows of the decade: Not only did they promise a definite end to the show almost three years ago, but they also managed to […]

Attention Deficit - WALE

After the three consistently great mixtapes (especially the fantastic Seinfeld-themed The Mixtape About Nothing), Wale should have run out of material for his debut album. Instead, he solidifies himself as Hip Hop’s “next big thing” with Attention Deficit, a record that appeals to the mainstream, but still brings the same energy and blazing with which […]

It’s a terrible paradox: Right around finals, students suddenly find themselves too tired from the semester to actually get down to business. Swamped with last-minute papers and final exams looming ahead, it is all too easy to succumb to the pleasures of an afternoon nap, the ever-distracting Facebook or the tempting tunes of Beatles […]

It’s written by the pop culture savants at The A.V. Club, the non-satirical, yet still witty entertainment flipside to The Onion.
Inventory isn’t so much a traditional book, but rather an extension of the Inventory Web series at avclub.com that takes a theme and crafts a list surrounding the idea. It’s a collection of lists that […]

Since iPod commercials stopped using U2 songs and started featuring bands like Feist and The Submarines, the term “indie” has been thrown around more than praise for the latest Animal Collective album.
But what defines the genre is as varied as the plethora of sounds on that same Animal Collective album. The New Orleans indie […]

The cold weather may be setting in, but the warming glow of the Generationals sticks around all year. With the release of their invigorating debut album Con Law, the New Orleans-based band’s feel-good, sunshine pop is the perfect accompaniment for a walk through Audubon Park or across the academic quad.
The Generationals — consisting of Ted Joyner […]

Another Voodoo Fest has come and gone, but with its passing comes fond memories of showering confetti, obscene drunkenness, thousands of costumed concert-goers and hours of dancing. The Hullabaloo staff reminisce on some of the most memorable parts of the 2009 Voodoo Experience.

It surprised me that Phoenix’s Oct. 1 show at Tipitina’s sold out. It shouldn’t have: they’re veteran musicians touring their critically acclaimed fourth album. Yet for some reason, Phoenix just didn’t seem to generate the same attention as the sold out Andrew Bird show occurring two days later. That was very stupid of me.
The surprises were […]

It’s not hard to dismiss Dan Deacon, a balding 28-year-old musician from Baltimore with large glasses, as just another electronic artist, another guy with a laptop and a couple dongles that smash together cool sounds and effects. If you did dismiss him and weren’t at The Big Top on Wednesday, you missed out on the […]

From the first scene, “The Informant!” takes audiences deep into the fractured psyche of Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon), an idealistic biochemist working at agricultural conglomerate Archer Daniels Midland. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and based on a true story, the almost unbelievable plot follows Whitacre’s transformation from the genius office monkey at ADM to corporate whistleblower […]

Regular people backed into corners seems to be a trend on cable television. Now that “Weeds” and “Breaking Bad” have become two of the most critically acclaimed shows on television, HBO throws its hat into the ring with Hung. Set to the modern-day backdrop of economically-devastated Detroit, […]
