Michael Caine Reacts to the News That He's Quitting Acting
The biggest Hollywood stars aren't always the ones fans expect.
Naturally, most people believe that the highest-grossing actors in the industry are A-list celebrities.
Despite this, Michael Caine has one of the most impressive filmographies, so imagine fans' surprise when news of his retirement began to circulate.
Caine's retirement announcement did not appear out of nowhere.
In fact, the actor has stated that Best Sellers, a comedy-drama set in 2021, will be his final film.
Caine attributed his decision to a lack of options for an 88-year-old celebrity, his own lack of interest in recent offers, and his health, which includes an ongoing spinal issue.
And at the time, the actor appeared adamant about his desire to leave Hollywood.
In the case of Hackman (Caine's co-star in the 1977 war film A Bridge Too Far), his most recent film credit before retirement was 2004's Welcome to Mooseport. As sad as it may be for Caine's fans to see him go, it didn't seem illogical or out of the realm of possibility that he was ready to call it quits.
Caine's representatives quickly denied reports that he was planning to retire.
The actor then confirmed in a statement to Variety that he had no plans to leave the industry just yet.
Many people around the world were likely pleased to hear the news, as Caine remains a major draw for moviegoers. Here's what the actor had to say about his possible retirement:
It's unclear whether Caine's earlier remarks were intended as a joke.
Alternatively, it's possible that the actor was simply speaking off the cuff without fully committing to his future career path.
In any case, Caine is said to be reading scripts in preparation for his next project.
Currently, the actor is set to star alongside Glenda Jackson in The Great Escaper, a historical action drama set to premiere in 2022.
After a festival run, the film was released on September 17, 2021 with little fanfare.
