Three of the Best True Crime Documentaries and How to Stream Them Right Now; A Spine-Tingling Holiday

It's okay to take a break from all the holiday cheer every now and then.

True crime documentaries can provide the best of cozy-winter-night entertainment, as they are always ready with a spine-shiver and gut-wrenching details. Here are three of the best true crime documentaries to stream this holiday season, from Netflix to HBO Max.

More than 20 serial killers roamed the crowded streets of Los Angeles in the 1970s and 1980s.

That's according to ABC News, which produced City of Angels, City of Death, a six-part true crime documentary film for Hulu.

It resulted in a slow-burning culture of fear over the next two decades.

"The city of Los Angeles just exploded," said retired LAPD detective Bob Grogan.

"People were terrified that their daughter would be the next victim," says one witness.

The Hillside Stranglers, the Freeway Killer, and the Skid Row Stabber all committed heinous murders, and the documentary takes an in-depth look at their crimes.

It's top-notch true crime at its finest.

What better way to spend a few engrossing, slipper-clad hours than by immersing yourself in the true mysteries that engulfed Los Angeles for two terrifying decades?

One of the best true crime documentaries currently available is City of Angels, City of Death.

It premiered on Hulu on November 24, 2021, possibly not coincidentally just in time for holiday binge-watching.

With a standard Hulu subscription, you can watch it.

Birgit Meier vanished in August of 1989.

The case dragged on indefinitely without a conclusion.

In fact, the body of the woman was not discovered until 2017, according to investigators.

In the meantime, they discovered a bloodstained car buried on serial killer Kurt-Werner Wichmann's property.

The man was also linked to the infamous "Ghrde murders" in Germany. Dig Deeper; The Disappearance of Birgit Meier is Netflix's look into the mind of a strange and particularly predatory killer.

"Birgit Meier vanishes, but the police have other concerns," Netflix's synopsis reads.

"Only Wolfgang Sielaff suspects that she is the victim of a brutal crime," says Meier's brother, who also happens to be a police detective.

"A search of a suspect's home reveals some gruesome details"

The four-part documentary, which was released for the holidays on November 26,2021, is almost deadpan in its presentation of facts and interviews, but there's something about the unemotional delivery that makes Dig Deeper one of the most chilling, and best, true crime documentaries for cold winter evenings.

With a standard Netflix subscription, you can watch Dig Deeper: The Disappearance of Birgit Meier.

If you enjoy celebrity documentaries as well as true crime, HBO Max has a great selection for you.

What Happened, Brittany Murphy? takes fans behind the scenes of the Clueless star's final days.

In addition, filmmakers delve into her husband's shady world, Simon Monjack.

Monjack died of the same symptoms as Murphy a few months after her death in 2010.

The documentary reveals a number of shocking details, including the fact that Monjack had two secret children whom he kept hidden from Murphy.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

In the months leading up to her death, her health and stability were likely eroded by eating and drug problems.

Brittany Murphy was an A-list actress who dated Enimen and Ashton Kutcher, among others.

She may have passed away in a manner that is almost stereotypical of Hollywood celebrities.

The details involving Monjack and her mother, on the other hand, are anything but ordinary.

As a result, it's a one-of-a-kind choice for holiday true crime viewing.

What Happened, Brittany Murphy? is available on HBO Max.
