Students enjoying the rare sight of snow celebrated an early white Christmas in a normally green New Orleans.

Tulane’s second annual Snow Day took place 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday on the Monroe Quad. During the event, students drank hot chocolate, ate snacks, built snowmen and had snowball fights to relieve stress before the upcoming finals week.

Originally, Snow Day was going to be held in the Lavin-Bernick Center Quad but drainage concerns prompted a move to Monroe Quad. A variety of organizations including the Tulane University Neuroscience Association, Biologically Enthusiastic Association for Students and Tulane, Science and Engineering Council of Students, Science and Engineering Honor Society and the Pre-Medical Society hosted Snow Day.

This year’s Snow Day involved several changes from those of previous years, including an increase in size, SECS president Donny Campbell said.

“This year’s snow day was a much larger campus-wide event,” SECS President Donny said.

“Six tons of snow were placed on the quad,” Campbell said. “We sold t-shirts as well as many different food items such as hot chocolate and brownies.”

Snow Day began last year as a means for the School of Science and Engineering to demonstrate its appreciation for the students and faculty by hosting a study break before finals week. They used fliers, Facebook notifications, e-mails and banners in the LBC as advertising tactics to help popularize the annual event.

The Snow Day has been a positive experience for many students on campus, said TUNA president David Tien and TUNA External Vice-President Anna Tien.

“For those of you who hadn’t attended Snow Day last year, you should have gone his year,” Anna Tien said. “It’s a good way to enjoy yourselves before finals start.”

David Tien also said the Snow Day was a welcome break from the stresses of the end of the semester.

“We all know that finals period is intense and stressful, and this is a nice study break before we all hit the books hard,” he said.
