I know that Pitchfork is supposed to be the end-all-be-all of “indie” music, but sometimes they’re just plain wrong. Contra is not as great as they seem to think it is. Merriweather Post Pavilion was not the greatest album of the last year. Having said that, the Pitchfork list of the Top 100 Tracks of the 2009 is an outstanding list of the best single tracks of the last year. Cam’ron’s “I Hate My Job” is simply a masterpiece of rhyme and Major Lazer’s “Keep It Goin’ Louder” is sure to keep dancers on their feet for decades to come.

Speaking of Contra and Vampire Weekend, the “Giving Up The Gun” video is so very silly. The Lil Jon appearance was completely underwhelming, but Jake Gyllenhaal showed some sweet tennis chops. It was on par with his cameo in that SNL Digital Short about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. All this Vampire Weekend coverage has created oodles of excitement for their upcoming April 9th show at the House of Blues — if only it wasn’t sold out.

  1. Contra is, in fact, as great as they think it is. Seriously. Listen to it again.
